A Matter of Balance is an evidence-based falls intervention program. It consists of small-group workshops offered in your community to help participants view falls as controllable. Participants of the program will learn to recognize and address many factors in your life and lifestyle that may be increasing your risk of falling.
Through group discussion, problem solving activities, assertiveness training, exercise and skill building, participants are empowered to take simple steps to become more active without the fear of falling.
A Matter of Balance uses trained coaches to teach older adult exercises that will help with strengthening and balance (25-30 minutes during sessions 3 through 8). Each class builds upon the previous week, so it’s best to attend all eight classes.
Portage County Health District has two Matter of Balance Coaches.
