History and Resources

The 80-acre Walter Preserve was donated to the Park District in 2005 by the late Wanda Walter. The property has been in Wanda Walter’s family for generations and she wanted to see it conserved as a legacy for the future. “There’s so much development happening all around, the animals need a place to live too,” said Wanda in describing her donation to Portage Park District.

Located near the Palmyra town hall and across the highway from the township park, the property includes about 50 acres of woods and 30 acres of field with wetlands and a meandering stream scattered throughout. On the north boundary, a historic stagecoach road can be found, which connects to the nearby historic Palmyra Stagecoach Inn.
