Delay in Second Half Collection Billing
Portage County Treasurer Announces Delay in Property Tax Bills Due to Statewide Inflation Cap Credit
RAVENNA, Ohio June 8, 2026 – Portage County property owners will experience a delay in receiving their second-half property tax bills due to the implementation of the new Ohio Inflation Cap Credit established under Ohio House Bill 186, Portage County Treasurer Joe Bica announced today. This statewide legislation introduces significant property tax reforms and relief measures, benefiting property owners across Ohio.
In light of the changes, the Ohio Tax Commissioner has extended the property tax payment deadline from the standard July due date to August 31, 2026. Taxpayers are advised to refrain from submitting payments until they receive their updated bills or verify the exact amount owed via the Portage County Treasurer’s website at portagecounty-oh.gov. Submitting an estimated payment may result in an overpayment, complicating the refund process.
Inflation Cap Credit
Ohio House Bill 186 introduces an innovative Inflation Cap Credit to provide relief to property owners by reducing tax burdens tied to inflationary pressures. This new credit will be directly applied to second-half tax bills, requiring a recalculation of amounts owed for every property in Portage County.
To accommodate the changes, additional time was required for the Ohio Department of Taxation and Portage County to calculate and apply these credits to individual tax rolls. Upgrades to county software systems were also necessary to ensure the accurate application of the new credit, a process recently finalized by the third-party software vendor.
What Property Owners Can Expect
Portage County residents will receive updated property tax statements in the coming weeks after verification and integration procedures are completed. Homeowners with mortgage escrow accounts are not required to take any action, as payments will be managed directly by their mortgage servicers.
“We recognize that delays in receiving property tax statements may cause inconvenience, and we’re committed to ensuring accuracy and transparency throughout this process. These changes represent a positive step toward alleviating some of the tax burdens for residents across Ohio,” said Bica, expressing his team’s gratitude for the understanding shown by residents during the transitional period.
