2025-2026 Park Improvements

Brady Switch Tower repairs

There has been significant planning and engineering done this year to bring these park projects and improvements to life. We are excited to continue the momentum into 2026 so you can explore and enjoy them!

Towner's Woods and PORTAGE Trailhead Improvements
Towner’s Woods Park in Franklin Township will get some much-needed improvements for its 50th birthday in 2026.  With increased visitation to the park and the PORTAGE Hike and Bike Trail, a relocated trail and redesigned trailhead will improve safety and traffic flow, and make room for gathering spaces, flush restrooms and a water fountain to improve visitor experiences.
Towner's Woods plan

A new 29-car parking area funded through ODOT will also be constructed on the west side of Ravenna Road to serve both the PORTAGE Hike and Bike Trail and Towner’s Woods. The Park District is currently seeking public comment on this project.

The historic Brady Interlocking Railroad Switch Tower building is being restored to reflect its original design. Concrete structural repairs were recently completed. A new roof and informational displays are planned for 2026. Special thanks to the Portage Park District Foundation, Bell Tower Brewing, The Battleground restaurant, and Kent Jaycees for donations towards the improvements and displays.

Headwaters Trail Phase VIII
The 1.3-mile Phase VIII of Headwaters Trail in Mantua Township is located on the old railroad corridor between Chamberlain Road and Diagonal Road. Construction will begin soon with completion by summer 2026. The project includes a trailhead parking area and restrooms at Chamberlain Road, connecting directly with the new 2.8-mile Aurora Trail.

Kame Esker Bog Park
This 215-acre natural area park was named to reflect its glacial geology and landscape. It lies adjacent to the Cooperrider Kent Bog State Nature Preserve, straddling the City of Kent  and Brimfield Township on Howe Road. The project is currently under construction with opening planned for summer 2026, and includes a 1.4-mile nature trail, 0.4-mile accessible trail, flush restrooms, picnic shelters and a nature play area.
