2026 Wild Hikes Challenge - Year of the Bog
Portage County has some of the highest quality bog ecosystems in the state. These special wetlands were created by receding glaciers, are acidic and nutrient-poor, and support rare and interesting plants like tamarack, sphagnum moss, leatherleaf, pitcher plants, and so many more.
Complete 8 of the challenge hikes and earn your tamarack medallion to celebrate the opening of our newest park later this summer: Kame-Esker Bog!
The Portage Park District Foundation is pleased to present the Wild Hikes Challenge (WHC), a program designed to encourage healthy recreation while showcasing Portage County’s rich natural heritage.

Our Foundation makes it possible to provide the Wild Hikes Challenge rewards. Many of our hiking staffs are hand-hewn by Hiram Farm staff in Hiram Township or supplied by Camp Asbury and hewn by Portage Park District volunteers.
